Waterproof Overtrousers

Waterproof overtrousers go on over your normal trousers, and often over your shoes, so you arrive dry after a wet ride or walk. Here you can read which types exist, from side-zip trousers to models with shoe covers. Gløde does not sell overtrousers yet; we make heated clothing for cold days.

Cycling or walking? Cycling overtrousers usually have more room at the knee and an ankle strap that keeps the hem out of the chain. Walking overtrousers are often straighter and quieter.

What to look for

• Fit over your own trousers: leave room for jeans or work trousers underneath. Try them on over the clothes you normally wear.
• Long side zips: they let you pull the trousers on over shoes or walking boots without sitting down.
• Shoe covers: built-in foot covers keep your shoes dry. Check that the strap under the sole stays in place on your pedals.
• Taped seams: rain often gets in at the seams first; taped seams keep them closed.
• Reflective details: they help others see you in the dark.

Staying warm in the rain

Overtrousers keep out rain and wind, but add little warmth. Your top half needs a warm layer too.

• Heated clothing for cycling: a heated vest under your rain jacket on cold, wet commutes.
• Warm dog walking clothes: layers for long walks in wind and rain.

Can I pull overtrousers on over my shoes?

Yes, if the legs are wide enough or have side zips. Long zips, sometimes up to the knee or hip, make it easy even with walking boots. Without zips you usually need to take your shoes off first.

What size overtrousers should I choose?

Overtrousers go over other clothes, so many people choose their usual size or one size up. Check the length while seated: on the bike the hem rises, and it should still cover the top of your shoe.

Built-in shoe covers or separate overshoes?

Built-in shoe covers are quick: one item, on in one go. Separate overshoes fit more shoe types and work with any trousers. If you mainly cycle short distances in town, the built-in version is often handier.

Bib or waist overtrousers?

Bib trousers come up over your stomach and stay put when you bend or lean forward on the bike. Waist versions are lighter and quicker on and off. For long rides or outdoor work, many people go for bib trousers.

Do waterproof trousers make you sweat?

They can, especially when you cycle hard. Breathable fabric and leg zips you can open a little help. A poncho over your overtrousers is another option, because more air moves underneath.
