Merino Base Layers

A merino base layer is the thin top and leggings you wear against your skin on cold days, under your normal clothes. This page explains merino versus synthetic, how thick to go and how layering works. Gløde does not sell base layers yet; we make heated vests that work as the warm middle layer.

Interested? We'll let you know.

Gløde is considering adding its own merino base layer. Leave your email and we'll send you one message if we launch it. No newsletter unless you ask for it.

Which thermal base layer suits you?

MaterialGood forKeep in mind
Merino woolEveryday wear, walking, travel and long days outside; soft on the skinOften more delicate and slower to dry than synthetic
SyntheticHard work and sport where you sweat a lot; usually dries quicklyMany people find it less soft against the skin
Merino blendThe feel of wool with extra strength from synthetic fibresThe mix differs per product; read the label

What to look for

  • Thickness: thin for active days, thicker for standing still, such as the sideline or a Christmas market.
  • Close fit: a base layer should sit close to your body without squeezing. A loose one lets cold air in underneath.
  • Length: long enough in the back and sleeves so nothing rides up when you bend or reach.
  • Flat seams: they lie flat under a backpack strap and do not rub.
  • Set or separates: a set is easy; separates help if your top and leg sizes differ.
  • Care: check the care label; many merino tops prefer a cool wash and drying flat.

Layering: base layer, warm layer, outer jacket

Most outdoor clothing works in three layers. The base layer sits against your skin, a warm middle layer holds the warmth, and an outer jacket keeps out wind and rain. Gløde makes that middle layer.

  • Heated body warmers: a heated vest over your base layer and under your coat, for days when a jumper is not enough.
  • Høgge for women: 5 heating zones on belly, back and neck, 3 heat levels up to 50 °C, power bank included.
  • Høgge for men: the same 5 zones and 3 heat levels, with a detachable hood.
  • Always cold? Practical ways to stay warm at home, at work and outside.

Frequently asked questions

Merino or synthetic base layer?

Merino feels soft, and many people like it for everyday wear and long days outside. Synthetic usually dries faster and is often sturdier, which suits hard work or sport. A blend sits in between. Your choice depends on how much you move and sweat.

How thick should a thermal base layer be?

Thin if you are active, for example walking briskly or cycling: you warm up yourself and need little bulk. A thicker layer suits standing still outside for a long time, on the sideline or at an outdoor market.

Should a base layer be tight?

Close, but not tight. Too loose and cold air moves in underneath; too tight and it feels uncomfortable when you move. Check that the sleeves and back stay in place when you raise your arms.

Can I wear a heated vest over a merino base layer?

Yes, that is a common combination. The base layer sits against your skin, the heated vest adds warmth on belly, back and neck, and your own coat goes on top. With Høgge you choose from 3 heat levels.

Do I need base layer leggings as well?

If your legs get cold, yes. Leggings under your trousers are often the simplest step on the bike, the sideline or a winter walk. A set with a matching top and leggings is an easy place to start.
