What to look for

• Length and slits: for cycling, the coat should cover your thighs when you sit, with a slit or two-way zip so it does not pull.
• Hood: adjustable, with a peak, and big enough to go over a hat or helmet while still turning with your head.
• Waterproof or water-repellent: a waterproof coat with taped seams keeps out steady rain; water-repellent fabric copes with showers.
• Breathable or not: breathable fabric lets moisture out, which helps when you cycle or walk briskly. A coat that does not breathe can feel clammy inside.
• Pockets and reflective details: pockets with a flap stay drier, and reflective details help others see you in the dark.

Staying warm under your raincoat

A raincoat keeps you dry; on a cold day the warmth comes from the layer underneath. Leave room for it when you choose your size.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a raincoat be for cycling?

Long enough to cover your thighs when you sit on the bike, often just above the knee. A back slit or two-way zip stops the coat pulling. Try it on seated, as a very long coat can tangle around your legs.

Lined or unlined raincoat?

An unlined coat is lighter, packs small and works in every season with a warm layer underneath. A lined coat is warmer on its own, but can feel too warm on a mild day. Many women choose unlined plus a warm layer.

Is a trench coat waterproof?

Not always. Many trench-style coats are water-repellent, which copes with a shower but not with a long walk in steady rain. If you want the trench look for heavy rain, check that the coat is described as waterproof with taped seams.

Is the Pølar a raincoat?
