Air where you feel it first.
In short: a neck fan moves air over your neck and face. It does not cool the air; it helps your sweat evaporate. A bladeless neck fan hides its fan wheels inside the band, which keeps hair away from the blades. A neck cooler with a cooling plate puts a cold plate against your skin and works without a breeze. It is heavier and empties its battery faster. Choose on noise, weight and how hot the air is.

Gløde does not sell neck fans or neck coolers (yet). This article compares types on how they work and on what institutes and manufacturers state. It is not a test and we did not try the products. We name no brands.
Looking for one device that cools and warms? Read about the neck cooler with heating. All cooling types are in our guide to cooling clothing.
The types compared
| Type | What you feel | Hair | Noise | Weight | Battery | In humid air |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neck fan with open fan heads | A direct airflow you can aim | Blades behind a grille; keep long hair away | A hum, close to your ears | Light | Longer than with a cooling plate | Less effect |
| Bladeless neck fan | Airflow from slots along the band | No blades at the outlets; intakes stay open | A hum; louder when outlets point at your ears | Light | Longer than with a cooling plate | Less effect |
| Neck fan with cooling plate | A cold plate on the skin plus airflow | As bladeless | A hum; the hot side needs a fan | Heavier | Only a few hours on the strongest cooling | The plate still works |
What a neck fan does, and what it does not
No neck fan blows cold air. It moves the air that is already there, and that airflow speeds up the evaporation of your sweat.
Two limits follow from this. In humid air, sweat evaporates slowly, so the fan does less. And when the air is hotter than your skin, about 35 °C, moving air also brings heat to your body. UK public health guidance says to use electric fans if the air temperature is below 35 °C. The World Health Organization says to use them only below 40 °C; above that, fans will heat the body. We state both and do not pick one.
In extreme heat, cooling clothing does not replace shade, water and breaks.
Neck fan or Peltier neck cooler?
A Peltier neck cooler works in another way. An electric current through a small semiconductor module moves heat from one side to the other. One side gets cold, the other hot. The cold plate lies against your neck. The hot side needs a heat sink or a fan to get rid of its heat.
The plate cools only the skin it touches. It does not cool the air around you. But nothing has to evaporate, so it also works in humid air and without a breeze. Reverse the current and the same plate warms: see our neck cooler comparison.
The trade-off is power. A cooling plate uses much more than a fan alone. Batteries are often about 4,000 to 8,000 mAh, and on the strongest cooling they last only a few hours. On a low setting or on fan only they last longer.
What to look for in a neck fan
Bladeless or open blades
A bladeless neck fan is not really without blades. Small fan wheels sit inside the band and push air out through slots. There is nothing at the outlets for hair to catch on. The intakes are still open, so tie long hair back or keep it clear of them. Open fan heads let you aim the air, but loose hair can still reach the blades behind the grille.
Noise
Every fan hums, and this one sits right under your ears. A lower speed is quieter. Outlets that point at your ears sound louder than outlets that point at your chin. Makers measure noise in different ways, so compare their figures with care.
Weight and fit
A neck fan has no plates or heat sinks, so it is usually the lighter type. That counts when you wear it for hours.
Battery and charging
The longest runtime on the box usually belongs to the lowest speed. Charging by USB-C is standard, so you can top up from a power bank during the day.
Which type for which situation?
- Commuting and city walks: a bladeless neck fan. Light, and tidy with long hair.
- Garden and DIY: a neck fan with open fan heads that you can aim.
- A quiet office: a bladeless neck fan on its lowest speed, or a small rechargeable fan on your desk.
- Standing in the sun, or humid heat: a neck cooler with a cooling plate. The plate works without a breeze.

What Gløde offers today
We do not make neck fans or neck coolers. What we do have is power. These devices usually charge by USB-C, and our power banks supply 5 V USB, so you can top up on the way. We make no promise for devices from other brands: check how yours charges.
Both are in our power banks collection. Not sure which size you need? Read our power bank guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best neck fan in 2027?
It depends on where you wear it. A bladeless neck fan is light and tidy with long hair. A neck fan with open fan heads lets you aim the air. In humid heat a neck cooler with a cooling plate does more, but it is heavier and its battery empties faster.
Do neck fans blow cold air?
No. A neck fan moves the air that is already there and helps your sweat evaporate. Only a neck cooler with a cooling plate has a part that turns cold, and it cools only the skin it touches.
Is a bladeless neck fan better for long hair?
Usually, yes. The outlets have no blades, so hair cannot catch there. The air intakes are still open, so tie long hair back or keep it clear of them.
Are neck fans noisy?
Every neck fan hums, and it sits close to your ears. A lower speed is quieter, and outlets that point away from your ears sound softer.
Neck fan or neck cooler with a cooling plate?
A neck fan is lighter and runs longer, but it does less in humid or very hot air. A cooling plate works without a breeze and in humid air, but only on the skin it touches, and only for a few hours on the strongest cooling.
Does a neck fan work in very hot weather?
When the air is hotter than your skin, about 35 °C, moving air also brings heat to your body. UK public health guidance says to use electric fans below 35 °C. The World Health Organization says below 40 °C.
