What to look for
- Size: match it to your mattress, from a single (90×200) to a double or king (180×200).
- Dual control: on a double bed, two controls let each side choose its own warmth.
- Foot zone and heat levels: some have a separate foot zone; several levels let you warm up high and turn down.
- Timer or pre-heat: many have one, so the bed is warm when you get in.
- Washing and fit: a detachable control lets you wash the blanket; corner straps or a fitted-sheet style keep it from shifting.
- Your bed and the cable: on a divan, boxspring or adjustable bed, check the manual. Plan where the cable runs so it is not trapped.

An underblanket is thin and lies under the fitted sheet, so your bed feels the same, only warmer. A heated topper is thicker and adds a softer layer as well. If you like your mattress as it is, an underblanket is usually the simpler choice.
Can I leave an electric blanket on all night?
That depends on the model, so follow the manufacturer's instructions. Many people switch it on to warm the bed beforehand and switch it off before they go to sleep. A timer or pre-heat setting makes that routine easy.
How do I look after an electric underblanket?
Do not fold or crease it while it is switched on, unless the maker allows it. Before each winter, check the cable, plug and control for damage. Wash and store it only as the care label and manual describe.
Is there an electric blanket that works without mains?
