Heated blankets: battery, USB or mains
A heated blanket has thin heating wires woven into the fabric. A mains throw keeps you warm on the sofa at night. A battery or USB blanket goes where there is no socket: the stand, the campsite, the car.
Which types exist?
Mains heated throw
The warmest type, for as long as it is plugged in. Timer and several levels. It stays in the living room.
Battery or USB blanket
Runs on a 5 V power bank or its own battery. Milder warmth, often 2–3 hours on high. Goes almost anywhere.
12 V car blanket
Plugs into the car socket and runs while the engine does. Handy on long winter drives. Unplug it when you park.
Wearable blanket or poncho

How to choose
- Power. Mains at home, battery or USB everywhere else.
- Heat levels. Three is common; top settings of battery blankets often reach roughly 50–60 °C at the element.
- Size and fabric. Shoulders to knees; a water-resistant outside for outdoor use.
- Power bank. Included or not, and with the right USB connector.
- Washability. A removable controller and battery make it easy.
Safety basics. Choose CE marking, overheating protection and an automatic shut-off. Do not sleep with it on unless the manufacturer allows it. Not for babies or small children. Keep it flat while it is on, check the cable, and never switch it on while wet.

What is the difference between a heated blanket and an electric blanket?
The terms are often used for the same thing. In many shops an electric blanket is a heated under-blanket for your bed. A heated blanket or throw goes over you on the sofa or outdoors. Battery and USB blankets are always of the second kind.
Can a heated blanket run on a power bank?
Yes, if it is a USB blanket. It runs on 5 V from a standard power bank. Manufacturers often quote around two to three hours on the highest setting and longer on low; a larger power bank lasts longer.
Can I wash a heated blanket?
Many can be machine washed at a low temperature once the controller and power bank are removed. Always follow the care label, air dry the blanket and never switch it on while it is still damp.
