Heating makes most sense when your dog moves little: a slow amble, waiting at the school gate, a long stand on the sideline. A dog that runs and plays usually stays warm in an ordinary coat.

What to look for

• Fit: measure back length, chest and neck. A coat that is too tight or too loose can rub under the legs or around the neck.
• Freedom of movement: shoulders and legs should move freely. Look for an opening for the harness.
• Heat source: the power bank belongs in a closed pocket on the back, with the cable out of reach of teeth and paws.
• Easy control: a button you can reach on the walk to turn the heat down or off. Your dog cannot tell you it is too warm, so start low.
• Washing: the battery and ideally the heating panel come out, so the coat can be washed. Follow the care label.
• Reflective details: they help others see your dog on dark winter evenings.

Frequently asked questions

Does my dog need a coat at all?

That depends on the dog. Short-haired, thin and small dogs often feel the cold sooner than dogs with a thick double coat. If your dog shivers or wants to turn back early on a cold walk, a coat can make the walk more comfortable.

How do I measure my dog for a coat?

Measure the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, the chest at its widest point behind the front legs, and the neck. Compare the numbers with the maker's size chart.

Can my dog wear a heated coat at home?

Use a heated coat on walks, while you are with your dog. Do not leave a dog alone in a heated coat, and take it off once you are back inside. After the first walks, check that nothing rubs around the legs or neck.

What keeps my dog warm at home after the walk?
